2019 Burning Seed: Zoophemism - Ngarrang Friday Burn
Ngarrang has always been here. Since the first seed, and for thousands of years before that, indeed since the beginning of time. The art piece is a collaboration between Wiradjuri man Pete Ingram and Gippsland local Aidan Kempster.
🔥 Together with a team of collaborators they built a tangible link to the eternal truth of the land we gather on.
🔥 It always was, and always will be, Ngarrang’s country. The first white immigrants to the area learnt this from Wiradjuri too. The town name ‘Narrandera’ comes from Ngarrang dhuray, which translates as water lizard with a spear.
🔥 The sculpture itself has been constructed from sustainably sourced local materials: natural wood from local forests and farms combined with construction waste. There will be a storytelling session at Ngarrang on Thursday night after dinner. Come when you see the signal fire.
🔥 Ngarrang and Gilaa will be ignited in a combined performance telling the story of how they became what they are. In this performance, the piece Wild Heart will play the character of Gilaa.
🔥 Ngarrang and Gilaa will not die. Even when the fire is extinguished, even when you eventually go home, they will live on.
